New Year New You

Well, would you look at that? It's that moment in our lives once more—the start of another cycle. As I sit here, trying to decide which topic from my phone notes to write about, I just can't settle on one. Two hours later, while watching 2013's Oz The Great and Powerful (featuring Mila Kunis, James Franco, Joey King, Rachel Weisz, Bill Cobbs, and other great actors and actresses), I started thinking about another movie I recently saw: Bullet Train. Both movies are great, by the way. Bravo to everyone involved in these two projects.
In this blog post, I want to explore not only these captivating films but also what they communicate about fate, transformation, and new beginnings. Just like the ladybug symbolizes good fortune and protection in the movie Bullet Train, I believe we can harness that energy as we step into a new year, reinventing ourselves along the way.
The Symbols of Fate and Fortune
In Bullet Train, we meet a highly skilled and intelligent agent named Ladybug, who seems to be notoriously unlucky. The plot follows him on an intricate mission set aboard a high-speed train, where various hitmen and women converge for their own schemes, all entwined by fate.
Ladybug embodies a rich symbol—like the ladybug itself. Ladybugs are often seen as omens of good luck. According to folklore, the number of spots on a ladybug can indicate how many months of good fortune you will have in the coming year. For instance, finding a 7-spot ladybug might suggest that you will have seven months filled with blessings.

Beyond merely good fortune, ladybugs are believed to carry the power of protection and health. These delightful little insects are often seen as guardians from misfortune, which is comforting as we navigate the unpredictable nature of life. Just think about this: studies indicate that people who believe in luck or protective symbols tend to experience a more positive outlook, which can influence their overall well-being.
The Nine Lives of Ladybug
Ladybug folklore varies greatly across cultures, adding depth to our understanding of these charming creatures. In France, for example, they are regarded as divine messengers. This enriches their significance and establishes the ladybug as not just a symbol of luck, but also of hope—a necessity as we approach a new cycle.
The term “ladybug” originates from European farmers who prayed for the Virgin Mary’s assistance to save their crops. When ladybugs appeared in abundance, those farmers referred to them as "beetle of Our Lady." This connection to Mary as a figure of protection embeds ladybugs into our culture as symbols of positive change.
Consider the Coccinellaseptempunctata, or the 7-Spot Ladybird Beetle, the most common type in England. According to a Japanese folktale about the Tentomushi (ladybug), the seven black spots represent "The Seven Sorrows of the World," which allows happiness and peace to flourish for everyone else. This symbolism highlights the themes of sacrifice and courage, critical reminders as we embark on our transformative journeys.
Embracing Change: The New Year Ahead
With this in mind, let’s focus on a pivotal aspect of this time of year—the chance to embrace change and work toward a "New You." A new cycle invites anticipation and possibility, as if we are standing at the gateway of a vast landscape filled with potential.
Many of us make New Year’s resolutions to reflect on the past and set our intentions for the future. While I have set ambitious resolutions in the past, I have learned that being realistic and kind to ourselves throughout this process is essential.
You can incorporate the ladybug's symbolism into your transformation this year. Focus on attracting good fortune through mindfulness and gratitude, and keep reminders of your goals close to you.
Reflecting on the Past Year
As you enter this new cycle, take a moment to reflect. What lessons did you learn last year? What challenges did you face? Channel the resilience of Ladybug and think about how to utilize good fortune while protecting your well-being.
Consider writing down your reflections. This form of self-dialogue can bring clarity and insight. For example, a recent survey showed that journaling can help improve emotional intelligence by as much as 25 percent, offering a clearer path toward your future goals.
Setting Intentions
Once you have reflected, shift your focus to setting intentions for the New Year. Unlike resolutions, which often feel like obligations, intentions are grounded in our desires and resonate with our true selves.
Start by setting three intentions. Here are some guiding ideas:
Self-Care: Make your physical and mental well-being a priority. Whether it is through regular exercise, meditation, or pursuing creative hobbies, find what nourishes your spirit.
Learning: Discover something new. This could be a skill you’ve always wanted to learn or diving deeper into a subject you’re passionate about.
Connections: Strengthen relationships, both old and new. Embrace opportunities for shared experiences and create lasting memories.
These intentions can serve as your guiding stars, helping you navigate the year ahead, just as a train follows its track.

Cultivating Good Fortune
As we step into this new chapter, let’s remember the ladybug and the messages it carries. It symbolizes more than luck; it invites us to be vigilant and grateful for our experiences, both good and bad.
Consider creating rituals to boost the feeling of good fortune and protection. One idea is to set up a small gratitude shrine at home, where you can place items that resonate with your intentions. Another practice is to light candles as a form of purification and invite positive energy into your space.
Spending time in nature is another enriching practice. It allows you to connect with the earth and ground yourself. In fact, research shows that spending even 20 minutes outside can significantly reduce stress levels and improve mood.
Finding Your Muse in Storytelling
Both Oz The Great and Powerful and Bullet Train excel in the art of storytelling. They pull us into elaborate worlds where fate and resilience shape the human experience. As you embark on your journey this year, think of storytelling as a tool for understanding your own narrative.
Write out your story, as if scripting a project. How does your character face challenges? What plot twists might appear? Sharing your narrative with others encourages co-creation and strengthens connections.
This act of storytelling deepens our understanding of our experiences. It reveals how fate intersects our lives and how every encounter shapes who we become.
A New Cycle Awaits
As we stand on the brink of a New Year, it’s the perfect time to explore new beginnings. Much like Ladybug in Bullet Train, we can navigate our lives with intention, embracing everything that comes our way, along with the protection and fortune that nature provides.
Take this season of renewal as an opportunity. Reflect on the past, establish your intentions, and welcome the challenges and successes that lie ahead. Just as ladybugs symbolize good fortune, so too can we carry hopes and dreams for a thriving year ahead.
May this New Year truly be a New You.
As you navigate these reflections, let the essence of the ladybug guide you toward self-discovery and growth. Here’s to an exciting journey ahead!
